A NEW ERA IN HOLISTIC CARE

For children with cancer and their families in Cyprus

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION

A new, innovative programme of the ELPIDA Foundation

The first Therapeutic Weekend of the ELPIDA Foundation for children with cancer and their families concludes with outstanding success

The ELPIDA Foundation for Children and Adolescents with Cancer and Leukaemia has successfully completed its first Therapeutic Weekend, held from 19 to 21 June 2026 at ROBINSON Cyprus, Larnaca.

Ten families of children with cancer and leukaemia participated in a three-day programme dedicated to psychological empowerment, emotional renewal, strengthening family bonds, and creating positive shared experiences within a safe and supportive environment.

The programme was delivered by an outstanding multidisciplinary team of professionals specialising in therapeutic recreation, who designed and coordinated a comprehensive series of creative, therapeutic and experiential activities for children, parents and siblings.

The response from participating families was deeply moving. They expressed their gratitude for the holistic care they received and for the meaningful psychological support that helped them regain strength, optimism and hope as they continue their difficult journey through childhood cancer.

Therapeutic recreation is an internationally recognised psychosocial intervention that contributes significantly to improving the quality of life of children facing serious illnesses and their families by strengthening emotional resilience, communication and family cohesion.

This initiative represents the continuation of a long-standing commitment by the ELPIDA Foundation. In 1996, the Foundation's President, Professor Loizos G. Loizou, introduced therapeutic recreation for children with cancer in Cyprus for the first time, as an integral component of the holistic model of care developed within the country's Paediatric Oncology Services.

This new Therapeutic Weekend represents the natural evolution of that philosophy, extending care beyond the child to embrace the entire family and establishing a new model of comprehensive psychosocial support in Cyprus.

The ELPIDA Foundation expresses its sincere appreciation to EKO for its generous and longstanding support, which made this programme possible, and to ROBINSON Cyprus for its outstanding hospitality and valuable contribution to the success of this initiative.

The ELPIDA Foundation will continue to develop innovative programmes that promote holistic care for children and adolescents with cancer and leukaemia, while providing meaningful support to their families throughout every stage of the treatment journey.
